What is Tramadol?

Tramadol, which is shelfed by the name Ultram is a drug that is used to treat mild or moderate serve pain. It is an opioid pain medication and is built with immediate-release formulation resulting in pain reliefs in less than an hour. Often combined with paracetamol (acetaminophen), it is an opioid class of analgesics, providing advance relief in mild or severe pain.

How does Tramadol Work?

Used with paracetamol (acetaminophen, the drug works by binding the μ-opioid receptor and acts as the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). Similar to opioid (narcotic) analgesics, it is converted to desmetramadol which changes the way your body responds to pain, and brings a sense of relief and relaxation.

Uses of Tramadol?

Used in combination with paracetamol (acetaminophen) to relieve moderate to severe pain. It helps in changing the way a body responds to pain or feel it, thus causing acute relaxation. Usually doctors prescribe a dose in every 4 to 6 hours are as needed for pain relief. Intake should be as prescribed by the doctor.

Dosage of Tramadol?

Based on your medical condition and response to medication the dosage of the drug varies. Usually prescribed in every 4-6 hours or as needed for the pain relief, it can be your doctor starts the medication at low dose to avoid the risk of addiction, continuing to gradual increase.

The maximum recommended dose is about 400mg per day in adults whereas a 300mg dose for people older than 75 years. The medication should only be increased on a doctor’s prescription. Self-prescribing can be harmful.

Precautions related to Tramadol?

Any allergy to tramadol should be told to doctor or pharmacist. It may contain some inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reaction or other problems on intake.

Medical history, specially any brain disorder (head injury, tumor, seizures), breathing disorder (asthma, sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease- COPD), Kidney disease, liver disease, mental disorder, mood disorder (depression, suicidal thoughts, confusion), family history of substance or alcohol abuse, stomach problem, intestinal problem (blockage, constipation, diarrhea, infection, paralytic ileus), Urinating dysfunctionality, pancreatic disorder, obesity is to be shared with your doctor or pharmacist.

The drug can cause dizziness and drowsiness, any alcohol or marijuana usage can lead to increase of these symptoms. It is recommended to not drive, use machinery, or do work that demand alertness in the influence of this drug. Alcohol should be avoid and marijuana is strictly prohibited. The medication should be taken on doctor’s prescription and only when there is a clear need during pregnancy. It is can be harmful to an unborn baby, you can talk in details to the doctor and discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Also, it can be passed on into breast milk and may cause some unhealthy effects on a nursing infant thus, it is recommended not to breast feed using this drug.

Possible Side Effects of Tramadol?

Some of the side effects of tramadol can be nausea, vomiting, constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, head ache. These symptoms may decrease after you have been using the drug for a while. However, if the effects persist or worsen, immediate medical care should be taken. Other side effects include, mental/ mood swings, stomach/ abdominal pain, urination dysfunctionality, signs of adrenal glands not functioning right such as loss of appetite, unusual tiredness, weight loss and other similar effects.
